Deathbell – With the Beyond

Doom metal has been making a large comeback in recent years.  It has evolved in many ways, some bands pulling off 20-minute songs, others staying true to doom metal's roots.  Deathbell is a band that, in some ways more than others, combines both of these interpretations.  The vocals on this album are very distant, giving it a modern stoner metal sound that is popular among bands such as Sleep and Windhand.  However, the instrumentation and overall tempo on here is a lot like Black Sabbath and Pentagram; they're more compact than the drawn-out, slowed-down riffs of most modern doom and stoner metal acts.

Pillars – Pyres & Gallows EP

One thing that deters me from listening to doom metal is the extremely long tracks.  This EP is four tracks and it's 34 minutes.  That's longer than your average brutal death metal album.  I mean, it doesn't sound that long, but I like hearing different songs over the span of 10 minutes, not one long one.  And it goes by slowly.  I mean it's nice to have on in the background, but that's about it.  Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, and I know that writing long songs is a characteristic of doom/stoner metal, so I won't be taking any points off for it, but if you're like me and you don't like long albums, then stay away from "Pyres & Gallows."
